A report from the Directorate of Public Health and Environment (DPHE) at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has highlighted significant concerns regarding the Kiteezi Landfill. The report indicates that critical issues at the landfill site began on June 28, 2024, when substantial cracks and waste shifts were detected in the northeastern section. These developments led to the blockage of the main drainage channel, causing leachate to flood nearby areas, including a neighborhood farm.
Dr. Daniel Ayen Okello, the Director of Public Health and Environment at KCCA, expressed serious concerns about the Kiteezi Landfill, a vital waste disposal site for Kampala, which has been operating beyond its capacity for some time. The current hazardous conditions at the landfill pose significant risks to waste management efficiency and the safety of the surrounding communities.
“The recent findings have shown alarming cracks and considerable waste movement. These issues are undermining the landfill’s structural integrity, which could result in severe environmental and public health hazards,” the report stated.
Dr. Okello further warned of the dire consequences if immediate measures are not taken. The potential risks include waste slides or a complete collapse of the landfill, which could lead to substantial property damage and loss of life. He also pointed out that the suspension of waste dumping operations could trigger public health crises and possibly lead to protests.
“If the situation continues unchecked, we could face serious challenges, including legal action for damages and disruptions to waste management operations, which may spark public unrest,” Okello cautioned. He also highlighted the likelihood of increased illegal dumping, which would exacerbate environmental and financial problems.
Dr. Okello called for urgent intervention and the mobilization of resources to address the critical situation at the landfill. “Immediate support and resource allocation are essential to prevent further deterioration of the situation,” he stressed. “Without swift action, the instability at the landfill could worsen, posing significant dangers to both human safety and the environment.”
The situation remains dire as efforts to stabilize the Kiteezi Landfill continue. The collapse, which took place in Nangabo sub-county, Kampala District, has resulted in over 20 confirmed deaths, with several individuals still unaccounted for. Following heavy rainfall, the landfill gave way, burying an unknown number of households. Search and rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to address the aftermath of the disaster
